World Languages

Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School supports a full World Language program for its students in Spanish, French, and Latin. The goal of the program is for each student to develop proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking in a modern (French or Spanish) or classical (Latin) language. The students have an opportunity to take four years of language at the high school level, even if they have placed out of the level I course in their chosen language.  AP courses are offered in all three languages to eligible students.

The AP courses may be taken by students who are juniors or seniors, after having completed 3 or 4 levels of their language courses. These courses are intended for highly motivated students and are comparable in content and difficulty to a language course at the third-year college level.

World Languages Department Mission Statement:
"The Gospel lives in conversation with culture, and if the Church holds back from the culture, the Gospel itself falls silent. Therefore, we must be fearless in crossing the threshold of the communication and information revolution now taking place."
– Pope Saint John Paul II

As human beings endowed with God-given dignity, we recognize the same dignity in other persons and seek to communicate with them and with the good God who created us. We in the World Language department are committed to educating all the students of Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School to speak, read, write, and comprehend another language.   We also aim to teach appreciation for the culture of and our connectedness with the children of God throughout the world. In this manner, we seek to help spread the good news and glory of God.

Graduation Requirements for World Language:
2 credits completed in high school of the same language are required.
As with all Diocesan high schools, courses taken in middle school do not transfer as high school credits. However, incoming freshmen who pass the language exemption exam, demonstrating proficiency at level I, may move directly into level II.
