Winter Sports

I. Boy’s Basketball

  • Offered for: Boys
  • Level:  Varsity, JV, and Freshmen
  • These teams will make cuts
  • Student-athletes in basketball should be prepared for rigorous daily practices and 2 – 3 games per week.
  • Equipment needed:  basketball shoes (may be purchased as a team)
  • Head Freshman Coach: Nick Delaware
  • Head JV Coach: Anthony Pringle
  • Assistant Coaches: Jamie Wilkins, Scott Perry, John O’Beirne
  • Head Coach: Angelo Hunt: Coach Hunt has been coaching high school basketball for 15 years, 5 of those at John Paul the Great.  Coach Hunt served in the U.S. Army, and attended West Virginia University prior to coaching. Before being hired as the Head Coach at JP, Coach Hunt held positions as an assistant basketball coach in several high schools throughout Northern Virginia.   The 2011-12 season saw Coach Hunt’s Wolves earn an invitation in the VISAA State Championship Tournament, a first for the program.

II.  Girl’s Basketball

  • Offered for: Girls
  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • These teams will make cuts
  • Student-athletes in basketball should be prepared for rigorous daily practices and 2 -3 games per week.
  • Equipment needed:  basketball shoes (may be purchased as a team)
  • Head JV Coach: Donald Palmer
  • Assistant Coach:
  • Head Coach: Tyrone Grandberry: Tyrone Grandberry was an all-state high school basketball player in North Carolina. He graduate with a BA degree  from Winston-Salem State University where he was a basketball and tennis athlete. After college, he played professional basketball  in Europe, Australia, and Brazil. Mr. Grandberry’s coaching resume includes six years of coaching girl’s middle school basketball at St. Thomas Aquinas Regional School (three championships), two years of boy’s high school coaching as an assistant coach, one year as Head Coach at Perth Women’s College in Australia, and ten years as Executive Director of a girl’s summer basketball camp and educational program in Greensboro, NC..

 III. Cheer (Winter)

  • Level: Varsity and JV
  • These teams do have tryouts and will make cuts; Tryouts will be separate from the Fall Cheer Squad.
  • Student-athletes in Cheerleading will have daily practices and will cheer at select home basketball and wrestling competitions, and winter pep rallies.
  • Equipment needed: cheer shoes and certain uniform pieces.
  • Head JV Coach: Christina Valentine
  • Head Coach: Mrs. Emily Clement

 IV. Swimming

  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for: Boys & Girls
  • These teams generally do not make cuts.
  • Facility:  In the past, we have utilized a number of aquatic facilities in the Prince William area. Plans for the 2013-2014 school year are still being finalized. 
  • Student-athletes in swimming will have practice 3-4 times a week before school.  A majority of meets are on Saturdays, though there may occasionally be a weekday meet.
  • Equipment needed:  Swim Goggles; Cap and bathing suits purchased through team order
  • Assistant Coach: Miss Catherine Prahm
  • Head Coach:  Ms. Sheila Francis: Sheila Francis is entering her seventh season, the second as the head swim coach at Saint John Paul the Great High School. She has 15 years of competitive swimming experience and was a Division 1 scholarship swimmer at Bradley University in Peoria, Il. During her tenure at Bradley, Coach Francis held the team record in the 200-yard backstroke for two of her four years. She also competed regularly in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle. While coaching at Saint John Paul, the swim team has qualified for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s State Swimming Championship five years in a row with both Top 8 and Top 16 individual and team relay finishes. The swim team has also qualified for and competed in the Catholic Nationals for three years.

 V. Wrestling

  • Levels:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for:  Boys
  • These teams generally do not make cuts
  • Student-athletes in wrestling will be expected to participate in after school practices M – F.  There are usually 2 meets per week.
  • Equipment needed:  wrestling shoes, wrestling head gear
  • Assistant Coach: Jacob Kingett
  • Head Coach: Frank Kingett: Retired from the US Coast Guard, Coach Kingett joined the JP faculty as a social studies teacher. He also ran and coached a local club wrestling team for many years and was an assistant wrestling coach at JP.

 VI. Indoor Track

  • Level: Varsity
  • Offered for: Boys & Girls
  • This team makes cuts when required due to large numbers.
  • Student-athletes in Indoor Track will be expected to participate in after school practices M-F.
  • Equipment needed: Running Shoes
  • Head Coach: Darrell Harris
