Spring Sports

1The 6 sports offered during the Spring season are:

I. Baseball

  • Offered for: Boys
  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • These teams will make cuts.
  • Student-athletes in baseball should be prepared for daily practices and 2 – 3 games per week.  Some games may take place on Saturdays.
  • Equipment needed:  baseball glove, baseball cleats.
  • Head Coach:  Selden Fritschner
  • Assistant Coach:  Robbie Faught

II.  Boy’s Lacrosse

  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for:  Boys
  • These teams will make cuts as needed.
  • Student-athletes in lacrosse will have daily practices after school.  There will be 2 to 3 games per week, with an occasional game falling on a Saturday.
  • Equipment needed:  lacrosse stick, cleats, lacrosse gloves.
  • Head Coach:  John O’Beirne: Coach O’Beirne began coaching at JP in 2013, and has 8 years of coaching experience.  A graduate of Catholic University of America, Coach O’Beirne has been on coaching staffs that led teams to three Virginia Independent School Athletic Association State Tournaments. He was an assistant for a team that won the Virginia State Championship in 2008 and also was runner-up in 2009.  Outside of coaching at JP, Coach O’Beirne serves as a midnight shift police officer for the Arlington County Police Department.

III. Girl’s Lacrosse

  • Levels:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for:  Girls
  • These teams will make cuts as needed.
  • Student-athletes in lacrosse will have daily practices after school.  There will be 2 to 3 games per week, with an occasional game falling on a Saturday.
  • Equipment needed:  lacrosse stick, cleats, protective goggles.
  • Head Coach:  Miss Catherine Prahm
  • JV Coach: Miss Krystyn Schmerbeck

 IV. Girl’s Soccer

  • Offered for: Girls
  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • These teams will make cuts.
  • Student-athletes in soccer are expected to participate in daily practice, with 2 -3 games per week. Fitness levels need to be high due to the amount of running during the season.
  • Equipment needed:  Soccer cleats and shin guards.
  • Head Coach:  Angela Beacher: Coach Beacher has been head coach since 2013. She is holds a USSF soccer coaching license and has coached previously at several high schools in the Manassas area.  Coach Beacher is also the head field hockey coach, and assists with girls’ basketball.
  • Head JV Coach: Richard Malenbranche
  • Assistant Coach: Katie Bidinger

V. Softball

  • Level: Varsity
  • This team will make cuts as needed.
  • Student-athletes in softball will have daily practices throughout the spring season.  They will have 2 – 3 games per week.
  • Facility:  John Paul does not have a softball field on campus. When practicing off campus, JP will provide transportation as needed and available.
  • Equipment needed:  softball glove and softball cleats.
  • Head Coach: Chris Hall: Coach Hall has more than 13 years of coaching experience and is entering his first season as the Wolves’ Head Softball Coach.  He has experience coaching youth, adults, and high school athletes in numerous sports, including softball, baseball, football and basketball, and has spent the last 4 years coaching softball in the Mt. Vernon youth travel softball program. Mr. Hall trains local youth and high school athletes in speed and agility training, and also serves as the Head Coach of the JV football team at John Paul the Great.

VI. Track & Field

  • Offered for: Boys & Girls
  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • This team does not make cuts.
  • Student-athletes in Track and Field will participate in a variety of the 16 events that are held in a high school track meet.  In addition to the running events, students may participate in the field events, including discus, high jump, long jump, shot put, and triple jump.  Athletes should be prepared for rigorous workouts and weekly meets, many of which fall on Saturdays.
  • Facility:  The team practices at John Paul on our eight lane rubberized track and surrounding field event facilities.
  • Equipment needed:  comfortable and durable running shoes.
  • Head Coach: Darrell Harris
  • Assistant Coaches: Mike Gotta, Andrew Kubick, Jim Garster, Emily Clement
