Fall Sports

_DSC7238The 6 sports offered during the Fall season are:

I. Cheer (Fall)

  • Level: Varsity and JV
  • These teams do have tryouts and will make cuts
  • Student-athletes in Cheerleading will have daily practices and will cheer at football games.  The Varsity team will cheer at all football games (home & away) throughout the Fall season.  JV cheerleaders will cheer at home football games.  The teams will also cheer in any pep rallies that are held in the fall.
  • Equipment needed: cheer shoes and certain uniform pieces

II. Cross Country

  • Offered for: Boys & Girls
  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • This team does not make cuts
  • Student-athletes in Cross Country should be prepared for rigorous running workouts and weekly competitions in which they run a 3.2 mile race.  The team practices mostly at John Paul the Great, but does host home meets at Leesylvania State Park.
  • Equipment needed:  comfortable and durable running shoes
  • Head Coach: Mike Gotta

III. Field Hockey

  • Levels:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for: Girls
  • These teams will make cuts
  • Student-athletes in field hockey are expected to participate in daily practice, with two to three games per week during the season.  Fitness levels need to be high due to the amount of running and the high temperatures during the season.  Most JV players are at the introductory level of the sport.
  • Equipment needed:  field hockey goggles, cleats, field hockey stick and shin guards
  • Assistant Coaches:  V: Mae Salitsky; JV: Krystyn Schmerbeck
  • Head JV Coach: Richard Malebranche
  • Head Coach:  Angela Beacher

IV. Football

  • Level:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for: Boys
  • These teams generally do not make cuts
  • Student-athletes in football will have daily practice after school.  Teams are usually given a 10 game schedule on the varsity level.  Most games are played on Friday or Saturday.
  • Equipment needed:  Football Cleats; Players must also have a girdle with pads, which will be for sale from the team
  • Assistant Coaches:  Gary Haskins, Chris Hall, Nick Metrokotsas, Dave Collins, Joe Bender, Eustaquio Castro-Mendoza, Casey McKether
  • Head Coach:  Jerry Sarchet: Coach Sarchet joined JP in 2011.  A former football player himself at Capital University in Ohio, Coach Sarchet has 15 years of football coaching experience.  Prior to John Paul he served as an assistant coach in North Carolina before being named Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at the Avalon School in Maryland.  Coach Sarchet served as an officer in the United States Army prior to entering teaching.  He currently serves as a US History Teacher.

V. Soccer (Boys)

  • Levels:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for:  Boys
  • These teams will make cuts
  • Student-athletes in soccer are expected to participate in daily practice, with two to three games per week during the season.  Fitness levels need to be high due to the amount of running and the high temperatures during the season.
  • Equipment needed:  Soccer cleats and shin guards
  • Assistant Coaches:  Bill Ludwig
  • JV Head Coach: Christine Chambers
  • Head Coach:  John O’Beirne

VI. Volleyball

  • Levels:  Varsity and JV
  • Offered for:  Girls
  • These teams will make cuts
  • Student-athletes in volleyball are expected to participate in daily practice, with two to three games per week during the season.
  • Equipment needed: non-scuff shoes, volleyball knee pads
