The Options Program

“Sean received the longest ovation of any student when he walked across the stage – we were brought to tears.  That moment reinforced what we had known for four years – we made the right choice.”

– John and Mary Jo Reidt, Parents of Sean Reidt, Graduate, Class of 2012

“If the disadvantaged child lives in a welcoming and open environment, he does not feel alone but in the heart of the community, and can thus learn that life is always worth living.”

– Saint John Paul II

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Saint John Paul the Great is proud to offer the Options Program.  The JP Options Program is an innovative, inclusive special education program for students with moderate intellectual or cognitive disabilities who cannot access the general curriculum.

The Options Program provides the opportunity for students to grow socially, spiritually, and academically alongside their peers in a Catholic environment. The program focuses on academic as well as vocational skills, with a highly individualized plan for each student. On graduation day, in lieu of a high school diploma, students receive a special Options Program certificate of completion.

Goals of the Options Program:

  1. For each student to be as fully integrated as possible into the total life of the school community.
  2. To inspire the school community to increase acceptance of those with disabilities, and to promote respect for human life by helping all to more fully realize the value and gifts inherent in each of God’s children.

Admission to the Options Program:

  1. Students who apply for the Options Program should already possess the social and behavioral skills necessary to thrive at Saint John Paul the Great, and may not exhibit any violent/dangerous behaviors towards oneself or others.
  2. The student must have the ability to independently perform all activities of daily living such as toileting, dressing, washing hands, etc.
  3. The student must have the ability to work in group situations with a minimum amount of distraction to others.
  4. Students must be open to fully participating in the spiritual life of the school, though they are not required to be Catholic.

Please visit the Options Admissions page for information about applying.

“If we had to use only one word to describe Sean’s time at JP, it would be ‘included.’  Sean loved his time at JP because of the faculty and his friends who included, supported, and loved him throughout his school day and extracurricular activities.  Sean was a student of John Paul the Great first and an Options student second. While he improved academically, he grew socially, he matured, his self confidence increased – JP became his home.

The culmination of his four years occurred at Baccalaureate when Sean received the longest ovation of any student when he walked across the stage – we were brought to tears.  That moment reinforced what we had known for four years – we made the right choice.”
